Ah, another Tuesday in paradise. Let's see... the video card on my main computer finally croaked on Friday...I'll have to RMA it back in (already approved). I ordered a new GTX 260 instead. I should be able to ebay the old card for about the purchase price of the 260, which is faster anyway.
I've been working on my old dell 8200 portable, which had/has a noisy fan. I finally couldn't take it anymore and took the thing apart to replace the fan...which makes about the same noise as the old one. So, off to ebay with the 8200...
I ordered a dell 1525 for about $500 yesterday. All I need is something that will run word, and the 1525 will do that just fine.
Got sick again Sunday...and was pretty miserable for a couple days. I'm feeling better today, so off to Boulder I go. I've been out 3-4 days this month for various doc appointments / sick time, so I'm behind.
The GTX 260 should be here Wed., which will be nice. The portable is SLOW. Even though I've upgraded the processor (1.8-> 2.6 pentium M) and the memory (512MB-> 2G) there is really on so much you can do with a 4-5 year old portable computer.
The new 1525 isn't anything that fancy. I mean, what would you expect for $500? It has 3G of ram, a 2Ghz dual core mobile processor, and a 15.4 inch HD display. After taking the 8200 apart 2-3 times, I'm not worried about upgrading the processor on the 1525 when the prices on mobile processors drop. Also, it comes with a 5400 RPM drive. It's not hard at all to image the drive with my main machine and upgrade the notebook to a 7200 RPM drive ($50 - $75), or maybe a SSD drive when the prices are more reasonable. That will result in a performance boost right there.
Not much else to tell. I've been trying to wear the leg brace less than all the time, in anticipation of dropping it all together. The jury is still out on that.
I finally did pick up my monster shop air compressor on Saturday. I've been looking at a specific model for months...and Friday I received a coupon via email for $170 off the price. That was too good to pass up. It's in the garage, waiting for me to anchor it to the concrete. It's a 60G 2 stage campbell hausfeld 220V compressor. It will work out great for my air tools and media blasting that I want to use it for.
