When you can't sleep, it's time to mess with the raid card

After messing with my 3805 raid card recently, I noticed it had more functionalilty than I remember when I bought it and set it up more than a year ago. Now, either this is something new in a more recent storage manager version, or I just plan missed it.

Anyway, one nice feature is that you can create multiple logical devices across multiple drives. For example, I created a raid 1+0 125G logical device across 8 drives on the card using a portion of the available space for a boot drive. Raid 1+0 is a striped set of mirrored drives. In this case, I've got 4 sets of mirrors striped together. With raid 1+0 you get speed and redundancy. The 3805 is bootable, so I'll just copy my boot drive image to the new 1+0 array and restart. I ran some tests and it looks like I'll go from about 80MB/sec on a single drive read to between 250-500 MB/sec on the 1+0 array. That should speed up windows quite a bit and keep me from spending money on those SSD drives. At least for now, anyway.

With the remainging space I generated a 1.2TB raid 6 array. Nothing new there....I had one before.

Cause I'm with Gimpy; SSD for the unwashed masses

I need an MRI on my knee. It's MCL related, and the ortho doc wants to get a better idea on what is up. Until then I'll hobble around on a brace.

Not much else going on...work, etc. I worked at home Monday and Tuesday (actually productive). Tonight I'm in Boulder and it will probably go late. It's the end of the month and I'm trying to squeeze in at least 3 more filings before Friday.

I've been following the trends in solid state disks (SSD) for about 9 months now. Prices have dropped enough that I'm almost interested. SSD's are unique because they are flash based (no rotating disk or head seek issues). Previous drawbacks include crappy JMicron SSD controllers (poor performance in random writes), and write speeds. Hopefully the new OCZ vertex series drives solves some of these problems. The drives sport multilevel flash (typical of lower cost SSD's), 200MB/sec reads and 160MB/sec writes (yet to be tested/verified by anyone). The drives include 32-64 MB of ram, and do NOT include the crappy series of JMicron controllers.

I thinking of putting a couple of 30G drives in a raid 0 stripe for a boot drive. I have an 3805 adaptec raid controller with a couple of extra channels. It should be interesting. Prices run $130 or so for the 30G versions, up from there for 60GB/128GB/256GB versions.

Wells Fargo -- going the extra mile for its customers

When will I receive my tax documents?

"Wells Fargo is required to have original tax documents postmarked by January 31. We will mail tax documents to customers who received or paid interest on qualifying deposit and credit accounts and loans during the tax year. Depending on the postal service delivery, you should receive your tax documents by early February."

Seriously? Just push the fucking button and generate my electronic statement. Everyone else has their shit together already. Why don't you? Oh...maybe you're too busy spending my bailout money.

Block work

I pulled the harmonic balancer off the crank today, which let me remove the crankshaft and camshaft. I ordered a tool for that, which came earlier this week.

I'll need to remove the cam bearings next. They're marked with a white arrow in this next picture:

I'll need to order a special tool for that.

I am the Resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live

Lately I've been resurrecting old, dead, fucked up computers for various friends. Essentially it entails some ebay work -- an old processor, some dusty memory nobody wants anymore, and digging through a box of old cables, boards, and the like.

Crap from your basement can live again!

I guess not everyone can solve their computer problems with something shiny and new.

The problem is that my quad core 8G computer is pretty god damn fast, and typicall the dead ass computer I'm working on is slow as dirt. I find myself waiting a lot. Waiting to download and install the 10,000 microsoft updates, waiting for internet pages to load, waiting for the damn thing to boot...etc.

It goes something like this:

sean: "open mofo! oPen! Come ON you can do it... FFS! it's explorer!"

hp crap printer

The formatter board went out on my HP 2015DN laser printer. Don't ask how I figured it out. Seriously, I'm not in the mood for broken shit right now. I've seen replacement boards sell between $50 and $250. I'll first try the dubious 50 dollar route and see if that does the trick.

I appear to be over being sick, after swallowing large amounts of random pills from target. Hey, if it's 20 bucks a bottle, it has to do something, right?

I had a review today which was generally positive "we think you're doing well" with some worrying notes "you're billing isn't high enough to warrant your salary" which basically means I should probably work harder, bill more, or start wondering if I'll have to live on less. Less mind you, relative to the 45 grand less I made in 2007 relative to 2006 and the 15 grand less I made in 2008 relative to 2006, both of which make my ass pucker up tighter than a 12 year old alter boy on Sunday after mass.

2006 wasn't exactly the high water mark to beat anyway.

Anyway, other than the blown up printer board and the so-so maybe good news but maybe not so good news from work, thing are just about tolerable.

It's almost midnight and I've been up since about 4:30 am...so enough shit talk and time for bed.

9 out of 10 couples actualy said "go fuck yourself"

Researchers scanned the brains of couples together for 20 years and compared them with results from new lovers.

About 10 percent of the mature couples had the same chemical reactions when shown photographs of their loved ones as those just starting out

--SO what you're saying is that I have a 90% chance of telling you to go fuck yourself.
